ICHULI: Mr. Clever Cat and Mrs. WeaverBird

Once upon a time, there was a cat that lived near a family of weaverbirds. He caught a lot of mice before he became old and weak. For many days, Mr. Cat had gone out but he had not been able to catch anything.

One day, he thought of a trick. He dressed like a doctor and went to Mrs. Weaverbird’s house. Mrs. Weaverbird’s young children were playing outside the window of their house. When they saw Mr. Cat they ran inside and hid.

Mrs. Weaverbird didn’t know what the matter was with her children. She went to the window and looked outside. “Oh, it’s Mr. Cat. He wants to play a trick,”  she said.

She went back to the room and whispered something into Mr. Weaverbird’s ear. Before he came back home, Mr.  Weaverbird had been collecting insects for their children to eat.

Mr.  Weaverbird said to his wife, Go and find out what Mr.  Cat wants. Mrs. Weaverbird didn’t go to the door. Instead, she went to the window and shouted to Mr. Cat outside. “Do you want anything from us,  Mr. Cat?”

“Oh no. Thank you, Mrs. Weaverbird but I have heard that your children are ill. I want to help you. Please, Mrs. Weaverbird, allow me to help you,” said Mr. Cat.

“Oh no. Thanks, Mr. Cat,” answered Mrs. Weaverbird. “We are all well and happy, and we don’t need your help.”

Mr. Cat could not catch any of Mrs. Weaverbird’s children. He went back very sad.

When Mr. Cat had gone, Mrs.  Weaverbird gathered together all her children and said to them, why did you run away?

The children answered, we had seen Mr.  Cat before you saw him and we were afraid. You did well to run away and hide. I want you to hide, whenever you see a cat.

From that day, Mrs. Weaverbird’s children have been very careful about cats. They always stay inside their house until they learn to fly.

That’s why Birds run away whenever they see a cat.

I am the Sparrow.
