SOAPS: An effective way to study your Bible

Paul was a murderer but he brands himself as a ‘special agent of God,’ can you believe him? When I read this statement, I couldn’t help but laugh my head off. I could only imagine the ladies rolling their eyes (if this thing existed then) at him every time he introduced himself like,

Hi, I am Paul, God’s special agent..!

Anyway, this got me wondering what exactly it is I call myself or should start calling myself lol, Who am I and what Paul based on to hold himself in such high esteem…I found the answer in the word.

I don’t know how you read your Bible but early this year, someone introduced me to a ‘SOAPS‘ (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer & Sharing) method, following all these steps in that order. You may share yours too in the comments section at the bottom of this blog so we learn from each other.

I find it easier to memorize scripture now compared to then. This will require you to have a pen and notebook and some quiet time. I am a nocturnal being so my time is deep in the night or early mornings besides my quiet time lately is determined by a toddler living rent free in my house yet somehow, she makes all the rules (*facepalm emoji*)!

I have recently fallen in love with Ephesians and it’s the book I am reading, this is how I did SOAPS  on chapter one;

1.Scripture: Ephesians 1 (normally if it’s a verse I will write it down but this I studied line by line and picked out my highlights as shown in the next step). I also use the Message Bible and the dictionary a lot to gain proper understanding.

2.Observation; (My Takeaways/ What I understood from this scripture)

  • I am blessed
  • I am chosen
  • I am holy
  • I am blameless
  • I am legally adopted
  • I am an heir (as a result of the above)
  • I am child, a daughter of God
  • I am loved
  • I am forgiven
  • I am redeemed
  • I am marked with a seal (The Holy Spirit)
  • I am abundantly free
  • I am included in Christ
  • I am God’s possession (bought at a price the currency of blood)
  • I am valued (why go that extra mile of blood shed and death if I was average?)
  • I have wisdom and understanding (to know the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure purposed in Christ)
  • I am called

3. Application;

I should never accept any other definition of myself outside of this truth and I will live with this knowledge as the foundation of my being.

I will daily look into the mirror and remind myself who you say I am especially on the cloudy days when I can hardly recognize or locate myself. This shall be my anchor!

4. Prayer:

17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[f] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people…

Lord, thank you for your word. Thank you that I am fertile ground and it shall bear fruit, thank you for you are giving me your spirit of wisdom and revelation so I may know you better. Thank for you are enlightening the eyes of my heart so that I may know the hope to which you have called me, the glorious riches of your inheritance.

Thank you Holy Spirit for you are daily reminding me of who I am and I am operating in my full capacity to fulfill the purpose for which I was beautifully and skillfully pieced together. Amen

5. Sharing: (Sharing is caring)

This I will share as a blog (which you  are reading, I can also share it with a friend or two, on my social media platforms, etc.)

So, there goes my Ephesians chapter one and it is easy for me to memories scripture this way. Also the song ‘Who You Say I am‘ by Hillsong makes more sense now.

Go on and live like you know who and whose you are! It’s okay and pleasing to your creator.

  1. Yes delicious as anticipated. My biggest take away is the requirement to intentionally SHARE the scripture which is the ultimate call of Christ to us, to go out into the world. Thanks for the SOAPS Joy, great one.

  2. Timely post on structured way to read the word. So we get to do our devotionals in haphazard manner adopting some of the elements in the structure not in any particular order. Structure & intention way to go. Thank you.
